April 12 meeting

April 5Our April meeting was a lot of fun. We beaded and embroidered glittery threads on a fabric heart which would become a brooch or something else.

Linda_mielkeLinda Mielke is a woman after my own heart.  She saves every little (and I mean little) scrap of fabric … especially if it glitters or sparkles.  She showed us how she prepared the fabric for the hearts that we were going to embellish and stuff. That was a project in itself.

Taking a neutral lightly patterned fabric, Linda proceeded to lay bits of metallic fabric, interesting yarn, just about anything, on top. No glue or stitching required at this stage.  She then covered the piece with net and sewed around the edge of the heart, thus holding the bits in place.

beginningBy the time we were finished adding beads and anything else we wished, we had a beautiful heart-shaped brooch to wear home.   That is, if we were quick enough to get it finished. It didn’t need to be a brooch either.  The original was large enough that it could have been filled with lavender and hung in a closet.

I saw Muriel Van Vugt’s finished brooch the next day and it was gorgeous.  . We are hoping to see many of them at our next meeting in the Members’ Showcase.  (Cindy Vilpors took the photos.)

Our last regular meeting of the year is on May 3 when we will again be making a brooch.  This time it is using rug hooking techniques and a different technique called “proddy” to make a sunflower.  Check out “Coming Meetings” for more details.

And then don’t forget to book for the June Dinner.
