On April 12, we invite you to join us to make a lovely embellished fabric heart ornament/pendant. Our instructor will be Barrie artist Linda Mielke.
Bits of glittery fabrics and found objects are used to create a heart shaped decoration, which can be used as a pendant, a brooch or even a Christmas tree ornament. These hearts can be quilted or stuffed, then embellished with beads, buttons or found objects.
Sew several together to make a wreath for your door, or give them away as wedding favors. They can be filled with dried lavender or rose to place in your closets or drawers.
Linda Mielke moved to Barrie in 2007 after retiring from teaching full time, as well as operating a Bed and Breakfast out of her home. Although her vocation was Family Studies, community theatre and the school drama club took front stage throughout her 32 years in Kincardine, where she honed her recycling/hoarding complex.
Like most small town residents, Linda developed many talents out of necessity; for example, turning Goodwill curtains into theatrical costumes, recycling men’s neckwear into stuffed animals, and changing a bit of wire, feather and an old tin can into a work of art. As well, she knows all the lyrics to Lydia the Tattooed Lady and is not afraid to belt them out on stage. Since moving to Barrie, she has now joined some fun groups to keep busy and meet new friends.
Participants should bring a basic sewing kit with hand sewing needle, thread, scissors and some pins. If you have beading needles, embroidery threads, decorative buttons or bobbles bring them along to embellish and create a one-of-a-kind heart. Instructions, some fabric, quilt batting, thread, and a variety of beads and buttons will be provided for the participants. A variety of fabric colours and beading options will be available in kit form to make your selections.
The meeting is held at the Simcoe County Museum at 1pm sharp until 3pm. The general public is invited to attend. There is a charge of $5 for members and $10 for non-members which covers instruction, materials and refreshments.
