Spinning yarn from animal or plant fibres so it could be knitted or woven into clothing or blankets was a very necessary skill for the pioneers. Nowadays, it is valued as a meditative and relaxing craft that can provide you a great creative outlet and the joy of making unique, one-of-a-kind items for your use or even to provide supplementary income.
Getting started: First watch the video below. It is an interview with a spinner and will give you an idea of what is involved.
A Google search of the internet for Spinning guilds or clubs will give you some direction in your area. Locally in Simcoe County, you can contact the Huronia Spinners which meets on the fourth Saturday of each month at the Simcoe County Museum and welcomes new members.
